Middle Years

Overview

The middle years – often referred to as middle school or junior high – are crucial to a child’s development as they leap toward the high school years. The grade configurations vary at RVS schools; please refer to your neighbourhood school to view the grades offered.

RVS is proud to offer many options to students in their schools, from exploring French to robotics to drama. Some schools also offer sports academies. Please view the Reach Beyond Your Classroom fact sheet for more information.

RVS also offers French Immersion, Christian programs, home education and online school in the middle years.

Assessment and Communication of Student Learning

Students are assessed based on outcomes in Alberta’s K to 12 curriculum and programs of study.

Teachers use a variety of strategies to communicate student progress and achievement. Communication about student achievement includes summary information and narratives about the student’s strengths, areas for improvement and next steps.

Parents/guardians can access their child’s learning progress throughout the year through the PowerSchool portal. This real-time reporting means data is available any time, without waiting for scheduled report cards. Parents/guardians are also encouraged to check in with their child’s teacher as desired. For more information, please see our Parent Guide to Real Time Reporting.

Parents/guardians will be invited to meet with their child’s teacher in the fall and spring to discuss the student’s progress.

Land Acknowledgment

Rocky View Schools would like to acknowledge the land and recognize all the Indigenous Peoples whose footprints have marked these lands from time immemorial. Together, we can learn and honour the Ways of Knowing of Indigenous Peoples for all future generations.
